Heba Sayed
Contemporary Egyptian artist Heba Sayed with one of her artworks at the opening exhibition of the Nūn Art Gallery 2020
Heba Sayed was born in the Giza Governorate in 1984. She spent her schooltime in Luxor and then went back to Cairo to take up her studies. She earned a Bachelor Degree in Social Work in 2006 and enrolled at the Department of Oil Painting of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Zamalek same year.
Heba says: "My upbringing in a charming city like Luxor was the greatest benefit for my cultural and artistic education. I was influenced by the different distinctive customs and traditions as well as by the charming nature and the artistic richness of the ancient Egyptian civilisation with its symbols. I realised that an artist is an integral part of the environment and the community surrounding him. Art elevates society. The primary goal of my work is to be an artist of simplicity affecting common people with my art."
Heba Sayed with two of her artworks
Heba Sayed's art belongs to the natural school, which is characterised by the simplícity of expression. She addresses the man and the woman as both of them hold the key to life. Her colourful artworks are full of expressive symbols representing Egyptian beliefs and traditions over time including symbols for good and evil, showing rituals connected to the appreciation for sheikhs, the elders, and the deceased. For example, the fish that you can see on many of her paintings is a symbol of goodness, livelihood and joy. The dress is a symbol for the joy of the expected livelihood while the cat is a hunter and thief stealing that joy.
Heba Sayed participated in many exhibitions inside and outside of Egypt.
