Double Exhibition "Athir - Ethereal Journey" by Brian Flynn and Mona Vardi
27 February - 25 March 2021

Athir - Ether/Aether, also called quintessence or spirit, is the 5th element that supplements the four classical elements earth, water, wind and fire. The element of ether is the celestial energy that fills all spaces. Ether acts as a bridge between Earth/Body and Heaven/Spirit.

For the Athir exhibition, we brought together two artists, who come from western countries but live in Egypt for many years. Brian Flynn's and Mona Vardi's artworks are inspirited by and connected with this 5th dimension.

If you would like to purchase an original artwork and you aren't in Luxor right now don't worry. Contact us and we will keep it for you until your next visit or find a way to send it to you - by private transport, DHL or another carrier.

Mona Vardi - Paintings:

Mona Vardi uses a multitude of organic materials to create vibrant dream spaces in her artworks. Pigments and powdered stones are mixed and poured on top of paint and collages as liquid substances. They serve to find new means of expression and expand into a poetic charm. Upon completion, the work has explored the genesis of the materials, the characteristics of the colours and dissolved itself by preserving the traces of its traversed path like the worldly stigma of experience. Colour in all its possible values defines itself as a true visual highly textured surface.

Mona Vardi - Sculptures:

Mona Vardi's mythological sculptures bring the presence of ancient Egyptian cow goddess Hathor into Nūn Art Gallery. In her work, Mona assembles a wide range of materials including bones, skins and roots. She transforms them into shamanic artworks to embrace the essence of the divine in femininity. This procedure becomes a vital part of letting Hathor enter a new century. This approach rises relevant questions of what once was and what today is. The sculptures come from a highly symbolic nature and touch on different themes such as mortality, spirituality, value and balance. A distinct entity is formed by connecting organic elements with human-made metallic structures. The pillars of bones become strong representations of a new body. By combining buffalo skin and golden painted horns with valuable jewellery the figures emit a radiant energy.

Brian Flynn - Paintings and Sculptures:

Aether is the fifth element and remains enigmatic and largely unknown relative to the four other elements earth, air, fire and water. It was first mentioned by the classical Greek philosophers, who garnered much of their knowledge from the Temple Teaching of ancient Egypt, yet it remained in dispute since they were not able to successfully define it. Interest resurfaced in mediaeval times with the alchemists who called it the Philosopher's stone which was able to transform base metals into gold.  Modern scientists often call it quintessence, which they try to describe as a dynamic and mysteriously expanding 'dark energy' that doesn't fit into any of their boxes, as it cannot be explained or understood by the logical mind.
Like all metaphysical concepts Aether escapes definition, yet it can be poetically explained as the Breath of God, the Nafas al-Rahman or the energy symbolized by the ancient Egyptian ankh. Like the other elements, it is a force of nature, a natural power as potent and evident as the other four, yet unless you are looking for it, Aether may well escape your recognition. With a slight chance of focus and the shift to the right side of the brain, this magical element becomes much more apparent and life becomes more complete.

The "Elements" series is shown for the very first time completely.

Brian Flynn - Galabeyas:

"When I paint I need to feel free in my body, mind and spirit, and the galabeya allows much greater freedom than modern western trousers, which cut or divide the body into upper and lower halves between the sacral chakra and the solar plexus. In addition to being a body covering, the galabeya serves me as a readily available cloth to wipe my brush or palette knife on, so over the years they take on the many colours I use in my paintings." Brian Flynn

Often asked to present and offer the galabeyas, which he wears while painting, the artist presents now three of his speckled galabeyas for the very first time.
